PostSubject: Echo Anime Awards 2013   Echo Anime Awards 2013 I_icon_minitimeSat Jan 04, 2014 2:53 pm

Hello ladies and gents, today I'll be presenting my awards for anime completing in 2013. Keep in mind that my opinion is different than yours, and I wasn't able to watch every anime in 2013. So which anime did I watch (and therefore eligible for awards?) Here is the list:

Arpeggio of Blue Steel
Beyond the Boundary
Galilei Donna
Golden Time
Infinite Stratos
Kill la Kill
Kuroko's Basketball
Log Horizon
Naruto Shippuden
Outbreak Company
Phi Brain
Samurai Flamenco
Space Brothers
Strike the Blood
Attack on Titan
Gatchaman Crowds
Genshiken Second Season
Oreimo
Servant x Service
Sunday Without God
Stella Women's Academy / C3-bu
Silver Spoon
The Eccentric Family
The World God Only Knows
Watamote
Chihayafuru 2
Flowers of Evil
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
HENNEKO
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
Kotoura-San
Maoyu
Shin Sekai Yori
The Pet Girl of Sakurasou
Vividred Operation
White Album

With that out of the way, let me tell you some special rules. For Best of [Category], the only anime eligible are those that finished their run in 2013. For example, Samurai Flamenco was set with 22 episodes, and we're only half way through. Therefore, it isn't eligible for a Best of [Category]. What it IS eligible for however, is Best OP / Best ED of the Year. Keep that in mind as we move along.

Now, getting right to it, let's open with best OP of the Year!

Best Opening of the Year
This category, along with Best Ending of the Year, were probably the hardest categories to judge. While other categories had obvious stars that were way ahead of the rest of the season, we had a ton of good music come out of the 2013.

The criteria for this category are:

  • How good the song is on it's own. As in, how enjoyable the song would be on a playlist somewhere, without any of its anime attachments.
  • How well the song sets up a new episode. As in, the emotions the song portrays matching up with the general mood of the show. (For example, how Gurren Lagann's "Row Row Fight the Power" song fits the anime so well)
  • The opening credit scenes. As in, recycled scenes from the anime in the OP < new animations / scenes

Now! We're going to begin with our honorable mention for this category. As I said earlier, this category was a very difficult choice, so I really wanted to several honorable mentions... in the end the one that one out was.......

***Honorable Mention***

Samurai Flamenco's "Just One Life" by SPYAIR!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPfy7C0ENy4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPfy7C0ENy4

Whenever I heard the guitar going off in the beginning, I knew exactly what I was in for. A quick, upbeat, light-hearted (most of the time) journey of hope and conviction. Samurai Flamenco may not be the greatest anime, and it barely holds a candle to Tiger & Bunny, but this OP is awesome.

***Runner-up***

Attack on Titan's "Guren no Yumiya" by Linked Horizon!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdWVnVsrAuI

I know a lot of people expected this to be in first place, and for good reason. The song is absolutely perfect for Attack on Titan. Perfectly setting up the newest episode in which we usually found our protagonists in a dire and hopeless situation... sends a chill down your spine. A perfect OP for a great anime, the music video is hilarious too

***BEST OP OF THE YEAR WINNER***

The Eccentric Family's "Uchouten Jinsei" by milktub!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvbH4tMPEM0

Yes, I do realize I'll probably get fought on this. No, I don't care (music tastes vary wildly anyway). But it's not just that it's that Eccentric Family was definitely the sleeper hit of the season. While the anime itself is getting it's worthy praise topping many lists like Best of Fall Season and Best of 2013, still, not everyone has seen it. Even without watching the anime, the OP is the catchiest of the year, but the song's true potential comes out when you watch the show. The more you watch the show (it's only 13 eps) the more you'll fall in love with this song and how great it is for this anime. Anyways, congratulations go to milktub and their song for The Eccentric Family!

Best Ending of the Year
As I said earlier, Best OP and Best ED were actually the hardest competitions this year. While picking Best OP was the hardest, the ED's of 2013 were no slouches, giving us great endings to depart with our episode. Best ED's are judged slightly differently, because instead of opening a new episode, their closing a possible drama-filled, action-packed, tear-inducing episode. Therefore, the transition from episode to ED is very impactful (and therefore important.

The criteria for this category are almost the same as Best OP:

  • How good the song is on it's own. As in, how enjoyable the song would be on a playlist somewhere, without any of its anime attachments.
  • How well the song ends an episode. As in, after a big reveal, a big plot twist, or a big emotional reaction, how well the ED does to highlight those resulting emotions for the variety of endings episodes have throughout their season.
  • The ending credit scenes. As in, recycled scenes from the anime in the ED < new animations / scenes

Now! We're going to begin with our honorable mention for this category.

***Honorable Mention***

Golden Time's "Sweet & Sweet CHERRY" by Yui Horie!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAc08I-juFY

Yui Horie may not be everyone's cup 'o tea, but I always liked how the song portrays the character Kaga Koko, one of the 3 main character's in Golden Time. Some of the fade-in's for this song are suprisingly well. Golden Time has a tendency to either end on a happy, lovey-dovey note (where this song fits perfectly), or the opposite. A somber, emotionally love-stricken note usually due to Linda or Tada Banri's missing memories. When it ends on this note though, I think it still fits really well. After the pain of a relationship, this song fades in and reminds you of what love is supposed to be about; soft, sweet, and passionate.

***Runner-up***

Shinsekai Yori's "Wareta Ringo" by Taneda Risa!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbrkKe-h68k
(I couldn't find a full version on YouTube, this is the best I got. If anyone finds a better one, I'll edit that in

Holy. Shit. Keep in mind that Shinsekai Yori is a Psychological / Thriller, so a naturally high amount of plot twists, big reveals, and dramatic moments. Imagine how many times this anime blew my mind, and then this song fades in. Dammmmn. The only reason this song didn't win ED of the year is because, unfortunately, the rest of the song doesn't hold up as well. It's still a very great song, but remember, we had a lot of great ED's this year fighting for that top spot....

***BEST ED OF THE YEAR WINNER***

Beyond the Boundary's "Daisy" by STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION!

OP:

Full version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qpm5qTnWo4

Purposefully linking the ED with a bit of the end of an episode, you can see how well KyoAni could end these episodes. While not immediately as catchy as Shinsekai Yori's ED, it stays consistently good across the entire song, making it just that little bit better as a stand-alone song. So, congratulations to STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION and their song for Beyound the Boundary!

***Best Romance / Romantic Comedy (Romcom) of the Year***
As we get into the Best of [Category]'s, keep in mind that when I rate an anime, my score deviation is about one and a half points lower than the average rating on MyAnimeList. I rate harshly, and that's because 7's don't mean 'average' to me like video game reviewers seem to think. 5 is more of the average, where a show getting an 8 or above is pretty much a must-watch. Now the criteria for best Romance / Romcom.. or rather, the leading factors that make a good Romance/Romcom. For example the animation doesn't matter too much (although it's appreciated) but the characters and the writing is much more important.

  • Characters, character development, and character interaction
  • Originality, plot, setting
  • Romance's: Portraying character emotions
  • Romcom's: Little to no reliance on situational comedy (smart humour please)

***Honorable Mention***

The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat

Echo Anime Awards 2013 50105

EchoRank™: 7
MAL Rank: 7.66

While I was initially turned of by this shows cutesy opening and what I could've sworn ecchi tag, I decided to give it a try after info that it actually has a Seinen tag; I was quite pleased. Nothing was perfect, but it's strong cast and interesting plot was enough to put it on top of the other Romcom's of the Year like Servant x Service and Oreimo. Just remember that hentai translates to pervert, it's not that kind of show.

***Runner-up***

Manglobe's The World God Only Knows: Goddesses!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 51949l

EchoRank™: 8
MAL Rank: 8.52

While widely regarded as a bit of a let down (from previous seasons and the manga version of the Goddesses arc), the third season still pulled its weight. If you haven't seen any of TGWOK yet, our main character, Katsuragi, isn't the typical harem male lead. He is intelligent, calculating, and though we don't get to see it often, caring (tsundere Katsuragi sup). The 3rd seasons nomination for best romcom of the year stem mostly from the ending half, when the relationship between Katsuragi, Chihiro, and Ayumi get put in the spotlight. Without throwing out any spoilers, the confusion of Katsuragi's true feelings getting mixed into his 'conquering' of the other girls was one of the best times I've had in this series, despite the fact that it didn't live up to it's hype.

***BEST ROMANCE / ROMANTIC COMEDY OF THE YEAR***

Satelight's White Album 2!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 53561

EchoRank™: 8
MAL Rank: 8.09

For anyone who has seen White Album 2, this was probably a no-brainer. WA2 gets no points for an original plot, or even original character (archetypes) or setting, but this show does what it does so, so right. The anime is your typical love triangle between Haruki, Setsuna, and Kazusa set at their final year in High School. The difference, and what makes this show so great, are the depths of our 3 characters. Each one has their own complex motives and set of character flaws that drive the show (and not in a forced way either). Instead of this being drawn out for you, you observe these character flaws through their interactions with others. Some of those flaws are just their quirks, but other flaws end up leading to the most well-done dramatic scenes I've seen in a long time. Another great about this show is that there is no clear winner. Viewing it from the guy's view (Haruki) you yourself usually ask the question, which girl would you choose? It's no easy answer. Both girls are flawed, and it's a matter of accepting the character for their entirety instead of the pixel-perfect girls we see in most anime. On top of that, our main man Haruki has got some issues himself, leading to the greatest romance and drama we've seen all year.

I will say one thing, don't watch White Album 1. You can, but it has nothing to do with White Album 2 and you should watch White Album 2.

Best Drama of the Year
Now some would find it weird that White Album 2 wins best Romance, but isn't in the running for Best Drama. That's because this section doesn't include drama's that are focused on Romantic Drama. That's what the Romance category is for. This Drama category is for serious stories that put character's in interesting situations, but again, not focused on romance. There may be romance in it as a subplot, but it's not the main point of the show. Now, for the main criteria for Best Drama:

  • 'Intense Scenes', as in the scenes that grip the viewer or that feeling you get when you HAVE to see what happens next
  • Uniqueness of plot and plot development
  • Character depth and reactions to their situation

***Honorable Mention***

AIC's Kotoura-san!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 45700

EchoRank™: 6
MAL Rank: 7.40

Ah, Kotoura-san. After the first episode, I fell in love with this seemingly gold-title. Unfortunately it moved away from it's dark drama near the end of the show, when it did do it's dark drama, it pulled on your emotional strings hard. The idea behind the realistic repercussions of being able to read minds (and not being able to control it), our young heroine was the seeming cause of her parents' divorce, and eventually her own mother abandoning her out of pure resentment. This was actually just a sub-plot in Kotoura-san, as the anime was more focused on her growing to accept her 'curse': finding friends who accept her as she is, then eventually growing to accept it as a gift. Even with that, the drama was done so well it made it all the way up here, second to only 2 other anime this year.

***Runner-up***

Kyoto Animation's Beyond the Boundary!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 54397

EchoRank™: 6
MAL Rank: 7.84

Yes, I know the romantic relationship between Kanbara and Kuriyama might put this in the Romance section, but I don't think they did their romantic relationship very well (to be fair, they just didn't really do anything with it). What they did do well, was have two characters meet each other in similarly poor situations, having them come to terms with and accept what they could never change (Kanbara's half-youmu blood, and Kuriyama's cursed clan blood). Nothing too original, but hey, it was really pretty!

***BEST DRAMA OF THE YEAR***

Madhouse's Chihayafuru 2!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 47435

EchoRank™: 8
MAL Rank: 8.67

Ok, take this plot: 3 kids become friends over a Japanese card game (where you someone reads a card and you pick up the corresponding poem as fast as you can) end up growing up to play 'Karuta' (growing up as in High School Karuta Club) and want to become the best in Japan. Sleeping yet? Sounds awful, I know. But this anime is actually incredible. The Karuta matches are extremely entertaining, and that feeling of 'I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT' couldn't get much stronger. You even have a love-triangle as a subplot! Chihaya is also one of the best girls in all of anime, and she has nothing to do with that moeblob shit, so there's that. If you haven't watched it yet give it a try, it will surprise you. Congratulations to Madhouse's sequel Chihayafuru 2 for Best Drama of the Year!

Best Slice of Life / Comedy of the Year
For a category that is so bloated, so jam-packed with mediocre and average anime (or complete shit, like Lucky Star). I was surprised we had such amazing titles in 2013. I know it's not everyone's favorite genre, but I would recommend any 3 of these titles to just about anybody. The main criteria for best Slice of Life / Comedy:

  • Narrative
  • Character development, character interaction, and character depth
  • Setting and plot

***Honorable Mention***

A1 Pictures' Silver Spoon!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 49237

EchoRank™: 8
MAL Rank: 8.18

With boring art and an equally boring plot (school on a farm), I actually started this anime late. This anime is what a slice of life is meant to be. I know we have two other perfect examples of great slice of life's, but they all tackle different aspects of human nature. Silver Spoon on the surface is a normal but entertaining slice of life about a city boy transferring to life on a farm. What you get in the subtext though, is Hachiken struggling with the categorization of farm animals. Food? Pets? What's the difference? If you raised a pig since it was a piglet, could you kill it and cook it? Is it okay for you enjoy the taste? These questions that formulate in Hachiken's city-boy mind end up infecting all the other kids in school who have taken the animals for granted, it's just always been that way for them. Anways, I kind of wish this won so I had more space to write about it, but for now let's move onto the runnerup.

***Runner-up***

Brain's Base's My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 49459

EchoRank™: 8
MAL Rank: 8.05

I absolutely gush whenever I talk about this anime. I'll try to condense this, but the synopsis' of SNAFU are utter shit so I'll try to remedy that here. Hachiman, (aka 8man) is our lead character. Sarcastic and antisocial, he's forced to join a club whose purpose is to help other people, the only other person in the club is our 2nd (of 3) main character Yukinoshita who is just as alone as Hachiman, but for completely different reasons. The anime suffers from a weak side-cast, but our 3 main characters are so well done. The anime follows Hachiman, Yukinoshita, and Yuigahama as they try to fill in their views on society and the world. They are flawed and incomplete views, but they develop in some way as the anime progresses. One of my favorite things about this show is that the character's are actually intelligent evidenced by their internal monologues, actions, and banter between each other instead of being told they are intelligent. I wish I could write more, but lets move on to the best of year...

***BEST SLICE OF LIFE/COMEDY OF THE YEAR***

J.C. Staff's The Pet Girl of Sakurasou!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 43643

EchoRank™: 9
MAL Rank: 8.43

While romance is a big plot thread in Sakurasou, that's not what makes it shine. The character's are put in a scenario that, at least for me, hits really close to home. Typical on all other accounts, the anime tackles 'genius' vs hard-working in a very realistic, down to earth way. How that affects the people around these geniuses, their relationships, and how the real-world treats these two categories of people. Contrasting a set of 'normal but hard-working people' versus a set of 'eccentric but geniuses', this group of friends try to find their place in the world. The actions and reactions of 'the real world', the geniuses, and the hard-workers is a true highlight of the show. Sometimes working together, sometimes competing, succeeding, and failing (the character's reactions to failure is especially good). Even with it's several flaws with it's early episodes and it's handle on romance, the execution on these characters and their interactions between themselves and the real world makes it a truly phenomenal show. Congratulations to JC Staff and their amazing anime, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou!

Best Psychological / Thriller of the Year
Something worth mentioning: I haven't seen Mirai Nikki yet, and I know that was a huge favorite. Keep it in mind! Psychological / Thriller criteria:

  • Setting and plot
  • 'Holy shit' moments, could be the feeling of despair, huge plot twists, or just a huge WTF (sup School Days)
  • Character reactions

***Honorable Mention***

Production I.G.'s Attack on Titan!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 47347

EchoRank™: 7
MAL Rank: 8.92

Ah, yes. One of the huge hits of the year. Remember this is the psychological, thriller category. I know AoT doesn't have a straight fit into this category, but the helplessness and sheer terror the Titans put into the humans and the viewers early on in the show was great. It's a shame the anime turned into a glorified fleshy mecha-anime, relieving some of that hopelessness the humans had.

***Runner-up***

Gainax's Stella Women's Academy, High School Division Class C³!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 52125

I know what you're thinking. Wait, what. What the fuck? Why is THAT in THIS category? I have one word for you my friend... Gainax. Starting off innocently enough, the anime delves into (well, several things, it's a very confused anime) but one of the things it goes into is our main character Yura Yamato's obsession of winning. Going from a girl joining a club just to make friends (all innocent-like, like k-On innocent) to an obsession that brings this girl to abandon her friends, isolate herself from everything to train (eventually causing harm to her own body from overexertion). It sounds weird, but it actually gets a little dark, and very serious. So it was entertaining enough and well, I guess I just didn't watch a lot of psychological / thrillers this year. It's not a perfect anime, but if you liked Girls und Panzer, you'll like this. Definitely not what I expected from it's synopsis!

***BEST PSYCHOLOGICAL / THRILLER OF THE YEAR***

A-1 Pictures' Shinsekai Yori!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 36775

One of the best futuristic dystopian stories I've seen in a long time, it suffers from a very slow start and very inconsistent art / animation (until about 8 episodes in, it gets stabler later on). If you get past the initial episodes, you are rewarded with the most intriguing title of the year, period. Addressing the greed, lust, curiosity, cowardice, hubris, and limitless potential of a human, A-1 Pictures crafts a tale that may seem a bit jumpy at times, but if you can hold on you will not go unsatisfied. I'm skirting around any specifics because I don't want to give anything away, but if you've got time to marathon an anime, you should give this a try. Congratulations to A-1 Pictures for Shinsekai Yori!

Best Adventure of the Year

  • The Setting
  • The Plot
  • Characters and Art

***Honorable Mention***

A-1 Pictures' Galilei Donna!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 53239

EchoRank™: 6
MAL Rank: 6.66

Galilei Donna has a lot of elements in it, but it's tied together quite well. The world itself could use a bit more fleshing out, but following the Galileo descendants on their journey to find Galileo's inheritance (fleeing from the cops, a corrupt mega-company, and space pirates) was quite entertaining.

***Runner-up***

Arms' Maoyu!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 46041

EchoRank™: 7
MAL Rank: 7.45

Did you like Spice & Wolf (for reasons other than just Holo?) Then you'll like this. Parading around as one of the most generic anime ever, with characters that don't even have actual names (just generic titles Maou and Yushaa), this anime actually got really good. The Demon-king (who happens to be a lady this time) wants to progress the human's technology to prevent a war between the Human and Demon realm. Because of this we get world building and delicious, delicious economics.

***BEST ADVENTURE OF THE YEAR***

Production I.G.'s Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 48817

EchoRank™: 7
MAL Rank: 7.81

If pacing and progression could ever be the best thing about a show, that award would go to this title. Starting with an epic space battle in the future, our hero Ledo crashes on what was thought lost thousands of years ago, Earth. He discovers that humans are still living on Earth, but their language, culture, values are completely different from his own. Starting with a slice of lifey bit with Ledo's adventures on Gargantia and slowly understanding their language and people. The anime then moves a bit into the philosophical side, when Ledo tries to understand their culture. Soon after, it moves into an action-phase with the discovery of another huge fleet trained to destroy Gargantia.... and so on. Congratulations to Production I.G. and Gargantia!

Best Action of the Year

  • Animation and Plot
  • Characters
  • Setting

***Honorable Mention***

Tatsunoko Production's Gatchaman Crowds!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 52471

EchoRank™: 6
MAL Rank: 7.57

I loved the art and energy of Gatchaman Crowds. It was a bit reminiscent of Eden of the East in plot, but our main character Ichinose's unmovable and unshakable optimism felt pretty refreshing after the anime I usually watch. The fight scenes weren't plentiful, but when shit went down, it certainly got really colorful and actually felt like the result of the battle could go either way, and have actual repercussions for the two parties depending on which way it went. That gave it a nice sense of intensity on top of the energy, making for an entertaining show. It's getting a second season!

***Runner-up***

Kyoto Animation's Beyond the Boundary!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 54397

EchoRank™: 6
MAL Rank: 7.84

Back for a third time in the award ceremonies, this times it's for the absolutely gorgeous fight scenes. The art and animation were absolutely top notch. The only thing that could have been better was the writing behind some of the action. Sometimes there wasn't a lot of weight behind the fights, and when there were fights that had plot behind it, it turned into a really pretty hack n slash video; definitely a little potential lost there. What was better than these you may ask? Well....

***BEST ACTION OF THE YEAR***

Production I.G.'s Attack on Titan!

Echo Anime Awards 2013 47347

EchoRank™: 7
MAL Rank: 8.92

Titan-form or maneuver-gear, the action in Attack on Titan were nothing short of fucking intense. All of the action carried a huge importance to the plot with the whole, you know, brink-of-extinction thing. The art and animation were also fantastic, with the maneuver gear providing some pretty cool ninja shit and the art portraying the horror in the humans. Congratulations to Production I.G. and Attack on Titan!
